Environmental Impact: The True Price of Fashion

Today we cover the environmental impact and thus the true cost of fashion. So, sit down, grab your Americano and let’s dive in. 

Here at STUNR we define ourselves as modern hedonists –– we indulge in beauty,  finesse and lushness. We, however, understand that luxury does not necessarily come hand in hand with sustainability. That’s why we pledged to center environmental impact at the very heart of all our collections.
 

We’re quite sure you’ve heard this sentence at least a couple of times in the last years: “we are destroying our planet’s ecosystem”. Want to know exactly why? Every five seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch. Over the last century, we have destroyed half of our wetlands. As much as 50 per cent of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 per cent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C

Even though fast fashion seems harmless compared to big oil or chemical companies, do not be easily deceived. It’s accessible, it’s trendy and it imitates all your favorite designer brands to meet your demands –– what could go wrong?

Let’s dive deeper. To manufacture such in-demand clothes at such a fast speed, fast fashion brands also need to dispose of them with equal speed to make room for incoming trends.

A fast-paced model requires fast-paced production, and unfortunately, quicker production gives way to an increase in environmental damage. By doing such things as using toxic, water-wasting materials to produce textiles, and neglecting safe workplace protocols as a means of acquiring cheap labour, the fast fashion industry has become a detriment to our environment, having a carbon footprint that rivals all other industrial productions.
